[Edward's been seeing all of these different posts come up. It's obnoxious to him, but he can see the potential of being able to communicate with so many like this, so he decided to give it a try.]

It's come to my attention that there's a few people here who use "magic." From what I've seen, there's nothing like it where I come from and I have a few questions for anyone who's willing to answer. In science, you've got different laws that everything follows. Is that the same for magic? Does some magic have laws while others don't? Are there different fields of magic? What are they? Where does the energy or power come from? What makes it "magic" and not a field of science?

Well, that all depends on the world, really. Some have a sort of 'law', while others simply need a source.

If we were to take my home world, for instance, you have different schools of magic: Adjuration, Conjuration, Divination, Enchantment, Evocation, Illusion, Necromancy and Transmutation. These each have different properties, different... power sources, let's say.

Some call upon your bond with a god or a demon. Some come straight from the magic coursing through your blood. Others still call upon the offering of various items. But some demand you bend the rules a bit, do a little naughty thing as mere mortals to delve into what normally should not belong to us.

[Of course she responded with a video. It wasn't that Ed was camera-shy or anything. He just wasn't used to it. It took him a little bit and some fumbling, but he found out how to work it for now.]

Transmutation is magic where you're from?

I'm guessing you know all of this because you use magic yourself? What do you specialize in?

I'm not certain about laws, I'm no scholar or Sharlayan, but I'll tell you what I can.

Each magic discipline has its own set of limitations and draw from different sources. In... [ Wait. She stops, frowns, pausing before muttering- ] Would it be in or on...? Gods damn it all. [ Alright, enough of that. ] The world I'm from is filled with aether. It's more or less the life force of every living thing on the planet, and our source of energy for magic. One has to be born with the ability to manipulate aether in order to use magic, though.

From what I understand just about anyone can study science. That's not always the case with magic. Not everyone can use it or learn how to. Some people just don't make the cut.

Even if you can, you probably can't use every kind of magic.

What determines that? There's different levels of skill between people when it comes to alchemy, but it's generally thought to be based on the person's understanding of it.

We don't have magic, but most people are born with abilities like that it now.

Somebody would probably confuse it for magic.

All things possess a quantifiable form and function. "Magic" is no exception to this. Once you arrive at the necessary conclusion to grasp these, it becomes possible to utilize factors that would seem impossible or incomprehensible without this understanding.

If that's the case, then how what's the difference between science and magic? Do you differentiate between the two where you're from?

Well, I don’t really think we consider it magic back home, but people seem to be reacting to my bending as if it’s magic... so perhaps I ought to consider it as such. Basically, certain members of the population where I’m from are born with the ability to control one of the four elements: earth, fire, air, or water. They all have their own individual limitations based on the bender’s skill and some environmental factors... and then there’s the Avatar, who’s the one person who can use all of them.

There’s also the spiritual realm, which tends to play by its own rules.

There are alchemists where I'm from who base their transmutations on the four elements like that, though we're not limited to transmuting with only one element. Is there overlap between bending these elements? For instance, would a person who can control air and a person who can control water both be able to work with steam?

What determines who can control what? Why can this Avatar guy control all elements but everyone else can only control one? What does this spiritual realm have to do with it?

Complicated question, kid. Seems to me it's different on every world, but where I come from magic isn't a thing just anyone can use. Fact is most of my people don't even believe in it anymore.

What we have are abilities that we call semblances. They aren't magic, they're just a more physical manipulation of your spiritual energy. Some families have hereditary semblances, but for most people it's a unique thing that sort of reflects something inherent about them or their personality. Case in point, my tough niece can store up the kinetic energy of the hits she takes and deal the damage back twofold, while my cute niece can move so fast she bursts into rose petals.

Magic users, on the other hand, don't need to rely on just their own energy. It's like they can tap into a force beyond themselves and draw on that to do all sorts of fancy tricks. They aren't really constrained to the physical world, at least not as we know it. Get it?

I think so. So, people where you're from can tap into their spirits for energy.

Where I'm from, magic is a gift from the Gods - creators of the world. That's really all the explanation I'm able to give you.

People nowadays aren't capable of magic. Instead, we use Dust - a source of energy with elemental properties. It's similar in presentation, but we can't exactly create wind from just our minds or something.

I would happily explain why magic is no longer used in Remnant, although it may take some time for a response as it's a rather long story.

Is that just speculation about the Gods, or are there records of them actually existing at some point?

I'm trying to learn as much as I can right now, so long explanations are welcome if you don't mind taking the time for it.

Where I'm from what most would probably consider magic is actually just someone rewriting the world formula based on their will. Of course it's not something just anyone can do.

I would personally consider it closer to science myself, since the work that first brought the world formula theory to the forefront was done by an alchemist. But people call it whatever they want, really.

I've never herd of the world formula theory? Care to explain?

I think magic is less magic and study than science? Most things that science does would be called magic in my old home.

There are people that claim that science is magic where I'm from too, though that tends to be limited to people out in the country who just don't have the resources to learn about it. Alchemy tends to be pretty prone to being mistaken for magic, probably from the light given off from the transmutation. I can see people thinking it has an otherworldly look to it I guess.

Are you a scientist too?

I see no reason that magic itself could not be the source of scientific study, should one be so inclined. However, to answer your question: the most common answer is that magic is, perhaps by its very nature, not something everyone can wield. One may certainly study the theories, but that alone is not truly enough for someone to be able to cast a spell, should they lack the capability to do so.

You've got a point. I guess I've got myself a bit of start on that here.

You're not the first person to suggest that magic can only be wielded by certain people, but no one seems to be able to tell me what the factors are that determines who can and can't use it other than skill. Care to enlighten me?

For me, it largely comes down to presentation or effect. I'd class my own abilities as breaking established rules of physics and other sciences, but finding how to induce the desired effect does involve some research that may as well be its own form of science.

I'm definitely starting to think that way about some of it at least. A lot of people mentioned certain criteria that has to be met or rules that have to be followed for magic to work. It's just that a lot of these rules fall outside what I would consider scientific laws.

There's also been some overlap, which I found surprising. At least one person said that they consider alchemy to be magic. I'll always view it as a science based on what I know about it, but it's interesting all the same.

Well, someone else kinda explained the magic schools that I'm familiar with already, so you got the lowdown on that already.

But uh, we got science too, I think. Some dumb nerd I know, his family invented elevators. He's all into the study and invention of robits and some fucked up necromancy ghost-pulling bullshit. Oh and planar systems, I guess.

So we got both - science and magic. Why do you wanna know? You interested in picking up some sparkle fingers or something?

Where I'm from messing with souls has dire consequences. Does this guy still have all of his body parts? Also, what are planar systems?

I'm asking to get a better idea of what kind of stuff I'm dealing with here. It's usually best to know what you're fighting against before it starts. There's also the chance that I could learn something that I can apply to my own alchemy.

Right now I'm too busy trying to sort everything I've been told to ask any more questions. I didn't expect so many people to jump in on this, and everyone's experiences with magic all seem to be really different.

I do have a question for you now that I think about it.

Got any suggestions on how to organize all this stuff? I'm swamped in notes.

I'm sure everyone has told you thus far that magic is differing world by world, and that is true. As someone who is heavily skilled in magic, as well as the rules governing other worlds, perhaps I can provide some insight into your question.

"Rules governing other worlds?" Are you talking about just how magic is different from world to world, or are you implying that scientific laws like gravity or the laws of motion can be different too?
