In her defense (she is my friend), 'society of telepaths' means that constant presence in and out of each other's minds was just part of their culture, and she was a young girl (this was about five years ago) who didn't fully realize that it wasn't part of ours. When we told her to stop, she stopped, very apologetically, and our friend group eventually developed a very rude habit of having secret telepathic conversations in front of other people.

In other words, this place works against you even worse than normally, is that correct? I definitely got some extra emotional tension this week.

It doesn't stop you, no, but it gives you something else to feel instead. It's similar to your strategy for other people's thoughts. The best part is, with keeping busy, you can choose what that extra feeling is. My personal recommendation is-- choose something that gives you a great sense of accomplishment. That way, when you are feeling terrible, you have something explicitly positive to counter with.
