As for lily ponds, water lilies are a sort of flower that grow on very large leaves allowing them the surface tension needed to stay afloat. They look like this:

There was a famous painter that did a style... similar to this, but much better than I can manage on a tablet— Claude Monet. Some of his most famous pieces were of water lilies on a pond in his garden.
