The latter. Or more exactly, I want to find out why you're thinking about pain.

Are you secretly looking for a right answer? A point of commonality with what you feel?

Different?

[ It's a statement imbued with possibility, and Lobelia's interest is clearly piqued... Although, with this anonymous person's cagey responses to him and to others, he has a feeling they're not going to be as forthcoming with their experiences as Lobelia tends to be with his.

That's too bad. ]

It sounds like we have something in common, then. Très bien!

Then tell me, does your difference make you happy?

[ Something in common, but clearly not everything. The difference gives Lobelia pause. ]

Oh? Is it that inconvenient?

Do you wish you experienced pain in a normal way?

Probably. Every person is born with certain unalterable limitations.

[ There's absolute conviction in that, because it's been true for Lobelia, too. But then, he's never gone about trying to change what he is. ]

You have something that distinguishes you from everyone else, but it doesn't make you feel gifted. Do you feel like you lack something, instead?

Perhaps you're my opposé, in this respect.
